About Outdoors Haven

Outdoors Haven is about getting outside and doing something there: hiking, backpacking, camping, paddling, fishing, climbing, and the trips that string several of those together. It is written for people planning to go, not for people who want to read about going.

What you will find here

Practical guides built around the decisions that actually decide how a trip goes. Which tent size to buy and why the capacity number misleads. Why a sleeping bag rated for the temperature still leaves you cold. How long a hike really takes once you count the climbing. What a family ranch week costs before anyone mentions the tips.

The site is organized by activity rather than by product, because that is how people plan. If you are going canoeing, you want the route, the gear, the safety and the food in one place, not scattered across a shop’s categories.

How we write

Numbers where they exist. Weights, temperatures, distances, prices. Where a figure is a typical range rather than a fixed fact, we say so, because outdoor gear and trip prices vary a lot by season and region.

Safety stated plainly. Some outdoor advice is a matter of preference and some of it is the difference between a bad night and a rescue. We try to be clear about which is which, and we do not bury the second kind under the first.

The honest answer, including when it is “you do not need that”. A lot of outdoor writing is shopping advice in disguise. Most people need less gear than they are sold, and we will say so.

Every article carries its update date. Regulations, prices and gear change, and you should be able to see how recent the advice is.

What we are not

We are not a shop, a tour operator or a guiding service. We do not sell trips or gear, and we cannot book anything for you. The site carries advertising and may earn a commission from some links; that does not decide what we recommend.

Nothing here replaces local knowledge, current conditions, or proper instruction for technical activities such as climbing, whitewater or winter mountaineering. Check the forecast, check the regulations where you are going, and tell someone your plan.

Corrections

If something here is wrong, out of date, or does not match what you found on the ground, tell us. Reader corrections are the most useful thing we receive.
